Because a river runs through it

“If our father had had his way, nobody who did not know how to fish would be allowed to disgrace a fish by catching him.”

-Norman Maclean, A River Runs Through It

.

At the NY Times- Does it matter if a fish can feel pain?

A friend and colleague once played Devil’s advocate, that the process of getting didn’t quite matter if  it (for e.g., shellfish) couldn’t quite feel the difference anyway. It doesn’t feel like we do.

I’m not sure why I felt strongly unsettled. Perhaps resting by that single line, entire production camps, camps  which commodify, mutilate, and subvert animals for our eating convenience, will continue to churn right on.

Be careful with anything that dallies with the life of another.
