it shows you don’t need the flair of colour to paint beauty, and no impressive forms to dictate attention. the play of light here is beautiful, an illumination without pretending coyness. substance – a sense of solidity- comes from forms themselves: the rough cotton, sturdy hands, worn wood, the frisson of hair misplaced, if artfully so. everything is as it is. the only trick the light here can be accused of is of making one see.
